A Hellgirl's Diary Part 6

‘We have to get him to the hospital. Someone call the ambulance!’ he ordered.

The whole class left. Including Mrs. Olivia, who looked as if she was going to faint any minute.

‘The ambulance wouldn’t be fast enough,’ I told him, in a matter-of-fact tone.

‘We’ll take the scissors out first, then.’

‘Good luck with that.’

For a minute there, I actually wanted to believe he would be able to pull it out.

‘It’s stuck. Come and help.’

I looked at him sharply.

‘You gotta be kidding me. I’ll only make it worse,’ I said. ‘Have you already forgotten I’m what caused this mishap?’

Now he turned and glared at me.

‘So you’re gonna sit there and watch him die,’ he said in a tone that felt as if he was telling me that’s what I should do. ‘You didn’t cause this. You didn’t even move when he tripped or when the scissors landed inside him.’

‘I breathed. That’s bad enough.’

‘So you’re going to do nothing about it? Even if it might save his life?’

‘It wouldn’t be the first time.’

But despite what I said, I couldn’t bear to watch Leonard just die. Maybe, maybe just this once, I can actually save someone.

‘Can’t believe I’m doing this,’ I murmured, kneeling next to Lucky Dude.

‘Here, hold the handle. One the count of three. 1, 2, THREE!’

The handles flew off. Lucky Dude’s eyes narrowed. My heart sank, predicting the worst.

‘Try again. Grab the ends.’

I did as he instructed.

‘Okay. 1, 2, Three!’

Miraculously, it came out, fully stained with blood. Leonard screamed. Ignoring him, Lucky Dude took his shirt off and wrapped it around Leonard’s thigh to momentarily stop the bleeding.

‘Go check if the ambulance is here.’

I walked out into the hallway. As I’d predicted, not a soul was around. And I bet they didn’t bother calling the ambulance either. Why would they? Too many lost causes, thanks to me…

Frustrated, I walked back into the classroom.

‘No one’s around.’

Aaron swore (I’m getting tired of writing “Lucky Dude” all the time). Leonard stopped screaming but had a steady flow of tears falling.

‘We’ll send him to the hospital ourselves, then. Help me lift him up.’

I put Leonard’s left arm over my shoulder, wincing as his weight were causing my muscles to tense up.

‘You drive to school?’

‘My question was left unanswered as we half carried-dragged Leonard towards the car park.

‘We’ll put him at the back seat. Can you support him for a while?’

‘Do I have a choice?’

I nearly stumbled as all of Leonard’s weight leaned on me, but I held my ground as Aaron unlocked the door. We managed to get Leonard in without breaking his leg.

‘Get in.’

Aaron was determined, speeding along the roads, ignoring hoots from other vehicles.

‘I don’t wanna die… I don’t wanna die…’

‘You’re not gonna die. Have faith,’ snapped Aaron. Leonard whimpered.

Millions of thoughts rushed through my head. Was the curse finally lifting? Maybe everything that’s happened were all coincidences? Maybe I’m normal after all.
